Empowering Communities: How Tailoring Skills Transform Lives in Kapoeta East
Through its Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs in Narus, Kapoeta East, ACROSS has provided avenues to higher education, empowering individuals and communities to improve their skills and play a critical role in promoting economic development and growth.
ACROSS celebrated 50 tailoring graduates from Katodori and Natinga Payams in early October 2024. The training gave participants the opportunity to work directly with fabrics and get a practical understanding of various materials, fabrics, and how they behave when sewing. To make well-informed design judgments, this practical knowledge is crucial.
As seen below, the training participants were unable to contain their happiness and had many success stories to share with ACROSS.
Rising Above: Julia’s Journey from Struggle to Success
Lomana’s daughter Julia Nagie Lomana, the second of five siblings, reflects on the hardships her family endured. “Growing up, my father had no cattle, so we had little means to support our education. We all tried to attend school, but the financial strain forced us to drop out. I left in primary five,” she recalls. Despite their relentless efforts, her parents struggled to provide a better future for their children, let alone the education they dreamed of.
Though life seemed bleak, Julia remained determined to rise above her circumstances. Hailing from Napotpot Boma in Katodori Payam, she found a turning point when she was invited by ACROSS, to a tailoring program. Driven by the desire to learn new skills and change her situation, she proudly graduated with a Certificate in Tailoring at Nairus Headquarters, Kapoeta East County.
“ACROSS has done something for me that I’ll never forget,” Julia says, her voice full of gratitude. “The knowledge I gained has opened doors I never imagined possible.” After completing her course, Julia’s hard work paid off – she secured a job as a tailor with Islamic Relief, earning $250 a month. While the sum might seem modest, it means everything to her.
“This income allows me to help my brothers and sisters, who dropped out of school long ago, to return and pursue their education. Supporting their dreams is now my priority,” Julia explains, her eyes gleaming with pride. Her goal doesn’t stop there once her siblings are back in school, she intends to resume her own education, confident that it will unlock a brighter future not only for her but for her entire family.
Julia’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of educational programs like ACROSS. “I’m so thankful to them,” she says, “Their support has not only changed my life but has given hope to my family and community.” Her story is a beacon of hope, showing how determination and opportunity can create life-changing pathways for individuals and communities alike.
Through her perseverance and the support of ACROSS, Julia’s story is a reminder of the incredible potential that lies within those who refuse to give up, and the vital role organizations play in helping individuals achieve their dreams.
From Soldier to Tailor: Abraham Ngor’s Journey of Resilience and Renewal
Abraham Ngor’s life has been defined by both hardship and hope. A man of resilience, his story is a powerful testament to how education and skills training can transform lives. On October 2, 2024, he graduated from a tailoring course, marking a pivotal chapter in his extraordinary journey.
Abraham’s past is steeped in sacrifice. At just 14, he left his family in 1989 to join the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), fighting for the liberation of South Sudan under the leadership of Dr. John Garang de Mabior. Trained as a commando in Ethiopia, Abraham fought in countless battles, his loyalty earning him a position as both bodyguard and cook for Dr. Garang. Their bond endured until the tragic helicopter crash that claimed Garang’s life on July 30, 2005.
The loss of his leader threw Abraham into a life of uncertainty. He held onto the memories and personal belongings of Dr. Garang but had no clear path for his own future. With no guidance or support, he struggled to provide for his family in the years that followed. But amidst this hardship, a new opportunity emerged.
Abraham was selected by ACROSS, to join a tailoring training program that would prove to be a turning point in his life. Despite having no prior knowledge of tailoring, Abraham embraced the chance to learn a skill that could change his circumstances. “ACROSS transformed my life and my family’s future,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. “They taught me skills to generate income at a time when I didn’t know how I would feed my children.”
With his newly acquired skills, Abraham is now able to sew garments, earning an income that supports his family. His children, who once faced an uncertain future, are now able to attend school. “Thanks to my work, my children will have an education, and there will always be food on the table. ACROSS has given me a new purpose,” he proudly declared.
But the impact of ACROSS goes beyond just teaching skills; it fosters a sense of hope, empowerment, and community. Abraham’s story is a shining example of how targeted programs can uplift individuals and transform entire families. His success is not just personal it ripples out to his community.
Looking ahead, Abraham is not only focused on providing for his family but also on giving back. Inspired by his own journey, he hopes to mentor young people facing similar struggles. “I want to show them that there is always a way out, and education is key,” he says with conviction.
From the battlefield to the sewing machine, Abraham Ngor’s story is one of resilience and renewal. It is a reminder that no matter where one starts, with dedication and the right support, a brighter future is always within reach. His heartfelt gratitude to ACROSS reflects the profound impact of the organization on his life and the lives of his family. Abraham’s journey embodies hope, perseverance, and the belief that every person has the potential to rise above their circumstances.
