Refugee Testimony

In 1972 when ACROSS was established, one of the main activities was resettling South Sudanese who were returning  home after the 17 Years War. Later in 1979 when Ugandan refugees were fleeing war, ACROSS was again on the forefront of refugee care, now in partnership with UNHCR.

Our work with refugees is biblically based.

“When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

Leviticus 19:33-34

Today, ACROSS continues in refugee care by managing Gorom and Lasu refugee camps and by caring for urban refugees in an ongoing partnership with UNHCR. We use an integrated approach including running schools, supporting urban refugees in education, managing the health referral desk for all refugees, operating ambulance services, food security and livelihoods, and much more.

In celebration of World Refugee Day on June 20, please take a moment to watch this video in which Elisama shares the brief history of ACROSS’ work with refugees followed by a moving testimony from one of our urban refugees.

World Refugee Day is June 20, 2021
